Ingredients
1 cup of toor dal
1 onion, sliced
2 green chillies chopped.
1 big tomato finely chopped.
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp jeera
Few curry leaves
1/2 inch grated ginger.
2 tbsp of cooking oil
a pinch asafoetida
1/8 tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp of fresh chopped coriander.
salt as per taste.
Method
1. Wash dal thoroughly and add 2 cups of water & soak for ½ an hr or more. Cover the vessel as you will be using the same water for cooking. Pressure cook the dal for 15 minutes along with salt.
2. Allow to cool naturally before opening the lid.
3. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds. When they pop, add jeera & curry leaves.
4. Add chopped onion, when pink add green chillies. When it gives a nice aroma add tomato, add grated ginger, fry then add asafoetida and cook it until soft.
5. Add dhal mixture , salt and turmeric bring to boil. Check the taste. Consistency should be slightly thick.
6. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
7. Pour into a serving dish and garnish it with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
8. Serve with hot rice and a spoon of desi ghee.
